What We Do

We promote the use of public transportation to help to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. We use the unique opportunities that employers and the workplace offer to this end. Our services focus on helping employers adopt “commuter benefits” – the provisions of Federal tax law that allow employers to provide tax-free transit fares to their employees as an employee benefit or pre-tax payroll deduction. We also work with transit agencies, regional planning organizations, environmental groups, chambers of commerce, transportation management associations and other organizations that share our concerns. Additionally, we work to promote the interests of employers and employees in ensuring the protection and enhancement of transportation benefits. Commuter Check programs have enrolled over 8000 employers since 1990 across the US.

Here’s an example of what we’ve done. We have served the San Francisco Bay Area since 1990. At that time, virtually no employers offered transit benefit programs. Commuter Check led the introduction and expansion of transit benefits in the Bay Area – Commuter Check is a household name. A 2006 study of Bay Area Regional Transit (BART) transit riders determined that 63 percent of employed peak period transit riders receive transit benefits, either as employer-paid benefits or as the employee-paid pre-tax plan. This is what we do, nationally.
