Recently the MTA Long Island Railroad (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad (MNR) announced that June 30, 2011 will be the last day they will accept pre-paid vouchers, including Commuter Check vouchers, as forms of payment for both Mail&Ride accounts and purchases at ticket windows.

What this means for you?
If you are ordering Commuter Check vouchers for your employees to pay for MTA Long Island Railroad (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad (MNR) products, you will no longer be able to do so.

NJ Transit and other providers in the tri-state area will continue to accept Commuter Check vouchers without interruption or changes.

What if I have unused vouchers?
Commuter Check will replace valid/non-expired Commuter Check Vouchers (transit only) with our popular anonymous Commuter Check pre-paid card free of charge. These cards can be used towards payment for tickets purchased through the Railroads’ Mail&Ride accounts.  Additionally, they can be used at automated fare vending machines and at ticket windows.

  • If the pre-paid card does not cover the value of the railroad monthly passes, employees will likely need to perform split transactions:
  • At ticket office windows, customers can use the Commuter Check card as one form of payment and pay the remaining amount with cash or personal check.
  • Ticket Machines accept only one form of payment; customers must add post tax funds to their Commuter Check card prior to Ticket Vending Machine purchase.
  • Metro-North’s  Mail&Ride program allows users to use two (2) forms of payment, including two credit cards.

What this means for your company going forward?
Going forward, Commuter Check offers two options for LIRR and Metro-North.

1. Continue to order the anonymous Commuter Check cards and educate your employees on the best methods for using them with the respective Railroads.  To learn more about the anonymous Commuter Check card contact a Customer Service Team at 800.531.2828.

2. Move your company to a Total Pre-Tax Commuting Solution – My Commuter Check.  Allow your employees to participate in the popular Mail&Ride Direct Program offered by the railroad or obtain a personalized reloadable version of the Commuter Check pre-paid card.  To learn more about My Commuter Check contact our Customer Support Team at 800.531.2828 or visit www.commutercheck.com/mycommutercheck.aspx
