The Sacramento Regional Transit pass program has ended. The SNTMA has scheduled a Commuter Tax Benefit workshop to help our member companies offer their employees more transportation benefits. Commuter Check is a pre-tax commuter benefit that applies to transit, cycling, vanpool and parking expenses. This workshop will teach you how to set up a tax-free commuter program for your employees. We will also cover the latest developments in both Washington and Sacramento on all types of commuter benefits. In tight budgetary times, there is no better way to save money while also reducing traffic congestion and helping the environment. http://www.commutercheck.com/Home.aspx

From the FAQ section of the Commuter Check website: Section 132 (f) of federal tax law allows employees to reduce their commuting costs by up to 40%, while helping employers save 10% or more on payroll taxes. Employees use tax-free dollars (subject to monthly limits) to pay for their commuting expenses, while you can provide this benefit to your employees as a substitute for taxable salary, as a supplemental benefit, or as a combination of the two. The maximum tax-free discount that can be provided to each employee for transit is $230 per month, and $230 per month for parking.

No organization is too large or too small. All types of employers from single person offices to large businesses with multiple locations, from any industry in the private, public and non-profit sectors can participate in Commuter Check. It allows any size company to add to the benefits package without adding cost.

"Rarely does an employee benefit save both the employee and the employer money. But through a great twist of the tax code, you may be able to commute with tax-free dollars...and save your boss tax dollars too." Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine

It does not cost employers anything but the staff time to initially set up Commuter Check.
