Across the country, thousands of employees receive Commuter Check vouchers to redeem
for passes and tickets for bus, train, ferry or vanpool commute. It's a great employee
benefit, and every month, more employees get them.
Why participate in Commuter Check?
First of all, it will save you and your employer a lot of money. If you’re a transit
rider, Federal law allows you to receive up to $1,320 a year in Commuter Checks
as a pre-tax payroll deduction or tax-free employee benefit and fully deductible
business expense to employers. If you drive and park, it also allows up to $2,580
a year in ParkCheks. The benefits apply to all types of employers in the private,
public and nonprofit sectors.
Commuter Check is also extremely popular because:
- It's a very easy benefit program to participate in. Just sign up with your employer
and start receiving your Commuter Checks monthly. If you’re company does not currently
participate, click here for tips on getting your employer
to enroll.
- The savings are immediate, and not given out at the end of the year.
- Participation is flexible. You have over one year to use your Commuter Checks, and
in case you switch transit providers, you can use them on all transit systems.
- It’s a response to the high cost of driving and parking. Commuter Checks and ParkCheks
let you know that your employer is sensitive to your transportation costs, environmental
concerns and your quality of life.
- Your employer will appreciate your suggesting Commuter Check because it improves
your company's benefits package at no cost, and is simple to administer.
Studies show that employees who receive Commuter Checks note reduced stress from
not driving, increased job satisfaction, improved on-time arrival and enhanced productivity.
What are the tax benefits?
If your employer offers Commuter Check as a pre-tax payroll deduction you
save on taxes, up to $500 each year! If your employer offers it as a benefit,
you won’t have to pay taxes on the amount you receive, up to a total of $110 per
month. And with ParkCheks, you can save up to $1,000 per year!
